The Problem With This Design
Well, I don’t think I actually admitted this to anyone up until now, but I think the new TLP sucks. Plain and simple. I mean sure it’s pretty and pink… but it doesn’t do two of the main things I want it to.
Branding and Identity
What is Triple L Productions? What the hell does that flower or my swirly font have to do with blog and web design? Nothing. Not only that, but it’s not memorable. There a plenty of sites that I visit not as much as my own, but I can recall clear important things about their designs and not my own. For example, take boagworld. I can recall two things off the top of my head - the green color used and the changing “avatar” on the right hand side.
I’ve been trying to develop a logo for TLP since I began designing years and years ago, but never was satisfied with anything I have created. I have a deadline for myself now to come up with something brilliant by 10am Monday morning… let’s see how it goes!
But branding and memorable design (for the right reasons!) isn’t all that I find the new TLP lacking.
Content is Key
I mentioned in Making the Best of Your Web Presence that content is the number one most important thing any website can have. And it shouldn’t be hidden… or unorganized. But that’s exactly how I find it here at TLP. It all made sense when I was building the new TLP … blog was a dump for ALL entries. Resources would be reviews and links to my favorite resources about web and graphic design.
Unfortunately now, looking at the site as it stands there are some major, major flaws. So, expect a new design soon. No urls will be changed, just the design. It will be minimal, content and user oriented and pretty last.
Hopefully it will be done in time, or just before the next CSS reboot!
